Don't be fooled: what looks like progression is actually regression!

The book of Ecclesiastes tells us “there is nothing new under the sun.” Someone else might say, “If you are around long enough, history will repeat itself.” I love to study history, both secular and Christian. As a student of history, I’ve witnessed that if we will learn from history, we can avoid making the same mistakes. This is the basic premise of the Bible. Primarily, it is a record of the revelation of God, but secondarily it is “written for our example and admonition,” according to 1 Corinthians 10.

Utilizing the lesson of God for His people, we can copy the road to blessing and avoid the roads to cursing. It has been said, “Experience is the best teacher” and that is true if you want to get beat-up along the way. However, if we will learn from others and from history, we can move forward in life from somebody else’s starting point! This is what the family unit should provide for us. As parents move forward in life, we can give our children what we have and prepare them to go farther along in life! This is called a generational lift.

Let History be Your Guide!
In Matthew 16, Jesus said, “I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” He has been building His church line upon line precept upon precept according to His pattern. Most Christian denominations are a memorial to a precept or principle God established along the way, but now are institutionalized or “frozen” in their past.

What is worse than not progressing are those who are regressing.
There are many churches regressing because they are replicating the mistakes of yesterday. Upon the dawn of the twentieth century, the secular world was fully embracing the theory of evolution. It wasn’t seen as a theory of course, but as a scientific fact. Many Christians bought into this lie and began to doubt the authority of the scripture. Slowly, when challenged by secular society, these churches drew back from the truth that didn’t seem to stand up against the “so-called” facts of science. Many of these denominations are now Christian in name only. Their doctrinal stances are based on human opinions rather then the truth of God’s Word. Not only have these churches lost their way, but they are dying in spirit and numbers. Jesus said, “My word is truth.” If you lose the Word, you lose Jesus; it is as simple as that!

There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. Even in laughter the heart may sorrow, And the end of mirth may be grief. The backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways, But a good man will be satisfied from above. The simple believes every word, But the prudent considers well his steps. A wise man fears and departs from evil (Proverbs 14:12-16)

Let’s Find Our Way to the Mountain of the Lord
We are faced with the same challenges today. Many churches think that being relevant is the road to success and acceptance in the greater society, but the end, that perspective yields a marginalized ministry without spiritual power. The secular world wants us to be insignificant, making us look simple and out of touch with reality. The word of the Lord to us is “stay in touch with God.” If we stay in touch with Him, we will be part of the church Jesus Christ is building. His church will be glorious and victorious!

According to Isaiah 2, the church of Jesus Christ, in the latter days of time, “shall be established on the mountains…exalted above the hill. Many people shall come and say, ‘Come, and let us go to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob.’”

Will everybody come? Surely not. However, history has proven that if we are faithful to the word in the time of trial, we will find out God’s way is the way of life.”

Which way will you choose?
