Relevant Magazine recently published a report led by Jean Twenge through San Diego State University. The report stated the young adults of this present time are the least religious in American history. They concluded, “Unlike previous studies, ours is able to show that millennials’ lower religious involvement is due to cultural change, not to millennials being young and unsettled.”* In the report, they also stated that adolescent millennials were actually leaving the church before they became young adults. I would like to make my observation: if these young people left their religious convictions when they were teens, where were their parents?
Has Pop Culture Won?
Many Christians (including church leaders) are blaming the trend of the lack of religious affiliations on culture. I believe they have been deceived to believe that culture is the guide and greatest influence. For this reason, many people “go with the flow of the times” because they believe in the inability of the church and family to resist popular culture. I believe this deception is the greatest problem of the time! The history of the Christian church strongly proves that not only can the church be strong in the midst of cultural adversity, but we actually flourish! American history proves through the three great awakenings that even strongly held cultural movements can change when confronted by a confident and faith-based church.
Where are the “Beecher’s?”
In the early 1800’s, our country was beset by an overwhelming culture of alcohol consumption. Families and even children were partaking of excessive amounts of alcohol on a daily basis. A man by the name of Lyman Beecher started what was called the “Temperance Movement,” and from his efforts, alcohol consumption was halved in a relatively short time period . This is why we call our school of higher learning “Beecher Institute.” His example is one we hope to emulate and in turn, train others to follow! In Isaiah 2:2-3 we learn about God’s plan for an earthly mission that will be a visible demonstration of a greater kingdom. Will you join me in the embrace of this word?
Time to Fight for the Generations!
This is the day of the New Awakening! It is time for the church to really believe that “greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world.” As Christian parents, we need to understand the call to claim our children for the Lord and not let them fall away, especially when they are still living at home! If we are going to be those that bring forth this New Awakening, we must have confidence in God’s ability to put His Word in the lives and mouths of our children!
“‘As for Me’, says the Lord, ‘this is My covenant with them: My Spirit who is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your descendants, nor from the mouth of your descendants’ descendants, says the Lord, from this time and forevermore.’” (Isaiah 59:21 NKJV)
