In studying the earliest civilizations, you will be amazed at the architectural wonders of the times. Whether the pyramids of Egypt, the America’s, or Stonehenge in Great Britain, you will wonder, “How did they do that?” A bigger question would be, “Why did they do that?”
“Thus says the Lord: “Do not learn the way of the Gentiles; Do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven, For the Gentiles are dismayed at them.” Jeremiah 10:2 NKJV
Most of the scientific observations involve how these structures often show an amazing awareness of astronomy. The study of the heavens has always been an intense motivator for humans in observing their reason for existence. Earlier civilizations, when observing the awesome wonder of the heavens, saw it as the place of gods. Great efforts were made to understand the universe, thinking it was the key to understanding the purpose of human existence. Also, an effort was made to determine if the heavens held the key to the future.
Unfortunately, in the America’s, strong evidence exists that these structures were also the place of human sacrifice to appease these gods. Literally, thousands of people went through amazing suffering to appease the gods that were the imagination of the people. I saw the Apocolypto, which showed the horrors of this error in vivid ways. I cannot imagine the human suffering that has occurred throughout the ages, simply because mankind had strayed from the living God. Jeremiah, the prophet, foretold of the end of these religions in the face of the true and living God.
“But the Lord is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King. At His wrath the earth will tremble, And the nations will not be able to endure His indignation. Thus you shall say to them: “The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under these heavens.” Jeremiah 10:10-11 NKJV
The gods of those civilizations faded from history, and were only recently rediscovered, as scientists were able to translate the hieroglyphs on the buildings. We must know that our God lives, and all history shall witness His reign upon the nations. The beautiful thing about our God is that He does not hide Himself behind the heavenly bodies; He has come down to the earth to reveal Himself to us. Whereas, the gods of human invention often reflect serpents, or the worst of human behavior; our God demonstrates something to emulate that will take us higher than ourselves. What signs from the heavens does God want us to observe? He tells us in the scriptures as a part of the creation story.
“Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years…” Genesis 1:14 NKJV
We should not see the heavenly bodies as signs of the future, but simply as a means to observe the seasons and times for our planning calendar. So I ask myself the question, “Why are preachers getting people alarmed by what they call the “blood moons?” The fact that one can trace them to historical events, or have authenticated their claims through NASA, should not impress us if it is contrary to the Word of God. When God said He would turn the moon to blood, He did not say it would have a red color from the alignment of the solar system. On the day of Pentecost, the Apostle Peter said, “But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.” (Acts 2:16, 19-20 NKJV)
In prophetic terminology, there is an obvious spiritual interpretation meant here since there is no evidence the moon was turned to blood. These books will soon fade from the bookshelves, and most people will not hold the authors accountable. From my experience with Bible prophecy teachers, no one will hold them accountable for what they say and people will continue to listen to their newest interpretations. It kind of reminds me of the followers of astrology, who read their signs in the daily papers. Most people do not really expect them to be true, but will still grab the parts that encourage them or foretell of good fortune. The ironic thing about Bible prophets is, they specialize in bad fortune, yet Christians still look for their guidance.
The “blessed hope” of the return of Christ has been replaced by the “cursed dread” of the evil at the time of His return. The contemplation of the evil to come was the motivation behind the evil behavior of the stargazers of the past. When contemplating the future, and the return of Christ, we should return to the hope of His calling in our lives!
