Will you help usher in the next great awakening?

In my last blog, I mentioned the winding down of the charismatic renewal. For many, when it seems like revival is waning, the response is to rekindle the flames and have another revival. In fact, there is an entire movement called the “revival movement.” I do not want to discount anyone’s sincere desire for God, but I believe it is time for a little more reflection through the Word. In Hosea 6 it says, “Come, and let us return to the Lord; For He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up. After two days He will revive us; On the third day He will raise us up, That we may live in His sight.” It is important to stay vigilant in our desire for God. This means we need times of repentance, or turning, from ways that are contrary to God; setting a new course directed by God. This attitude will bring a revival in our life. We need to experience that revival, or fresh wind of the breath of God, to come alive. As it was in the beginning, life comes from the breath of God! However, we need to recognize that Hosea admonished us, through the Holy Spirit, to move to the next stage in the development process with the Lord. He said, “On the third day He will raise us up, that we may live in His sight.” In this reference, the word “live” is the same word translated “revive,” but it includes another aspect. It says that we will “rise up.” Jesus did not just come back to life; He “rose up” to resurrected life! It was a new beginning and a new work.

Our nation, and the world, need more than a revival—we need an awakening! In this day, the call of the Holy Spirit is to rise up—and as we do, it will produce an awakening. The charismatic renewal has been so awesome, as millions of people around the world, often dead in their “Christian religion,” came alive in the Holy Spirit. But this is the time when the world needs us to rise up and take our place. Many of the countries most influenced by the charismatic renewal are under the most influence of the devil. Central America has experienced an amazing revival, bringing many to the renewal, but their countries continuously fight for the title of the “murder capitol” of the world. We must take our place!

Although many like to emphasize taking our place in government and business, this is not our God-given place of eternal purpose, but rather the places where the eternal purpose is fulfilled. What is the purpose? Jesus made it very clear in Matthew 5:13 when He said, “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” It is a wonderful concept for us to be in positions of worldly authority. Yet, we must understand that we will not change the world through politics or money. We can only have influence if we shine our light. Sadly, in some countries, Christians have taken positions of leadership only to do the same things their predecessors did.

The Word declares that we need to wake up! Ephesians 5 says that we “were once darkness.” We need to be clear on what the Word says. You were in the dark; you were the dark, but when you came to Christ, He made you into a light. The admonition says to “walk as children of the light.” It goes on to say, “Awake you who sleep, arise from the dead and Christ will give you light.” I believe this is a time that we must make a choice to be light. The first go-around was initiated by God. Now, He wants us to make the choice to be light, and when we do, He will give us even greater light. It is time for us to “Arise and shine for our light has come.” Isaiah made this declaration in Isaiah 60. He goes on to say, “…darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people,” but when we make our choice to arise and shine, “His glory will be seen upon you.” Take note of this part, “The Gentiles will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.” Let’s not miss this time for a new work of God, through an awakening in His people, by settling for revival. The world needs the power of transformation that only an awakening can bring, and we are the generation chosen to bring it forth!
